PORTUGAL
Taking a road trip to New Jersey is a challenge for us, so you can only imagine what a road trip through Portugal might be. Of course, driving a stick shift and using a GPS that spoke a mile a minute with a thick accent didn’t help. Our itinerary included Sintra, where we stayed in the charming five-star Lawrence Hotel, the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula.
Next, we went to Obidos, our favorite town painted all blue and white and overflowing with pink Bougainvillea. Then there was Marvao, a charming hilltop Village with steep alleys. Next was Evora, an old fishing village where the fish were so fresh; they practically jumped out of the sea onto our plate.
In Estremez, we stayed at Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel. It felt like staying in a palace. We slept in a four-poster bed with silk draped over us, like royalty. Our last hotel was the Estalagem Villa Albatroz in Cascais, a small yellow hotel overlooking Portugal’s amazing beach.
